This exercise in symmetry is wonderful for preschoolers, kindergarteners and old kids, as it teaches them thinking skills, understanding symmetry, drawing, attention and more.
There are many free symmetry worksheets available for download. I prefer this activity as the child has a chance to observe and copy the symmetry of nature.
A line of symmetry is the exact middle of a leaf. Go for a walk, find the leaves you’d like to copy. Cut your leaves in half. Glue halves of the leaves onto a sheet of paper. Ask the child to finish the other half, keeping as much detail, as possible. Older children should be able to create exact copies of the leaves and younger ones would probably have a hard time with the leaf’s outline, which is ok. This experiment could be repeated with flowers.
