I have always loved the tradition of Advent, of anticipating a miracle. Making a handmade Advent calendar only makes the miracle more special. For our family, Advent is not an opportunity to give kids extra chocolate: it’s a month of shared experiences.
A typical Advent calendar contains 24 openings. This calendar, I made out of leftover gift wrap. I cut it into squares, rolled the squares into cones and secured them with tape. Using clear tape, I then attached the cones to our playroom wall.
I filled the calendar with notes, such as “Get ready, we are baking snowflake-shaped cookies!” or: “Daddy is reading us a christmas story!” or: “We are making cinnamon play dough today!” or: ” We are going to the nearby town to see a Christmas play.” Our calendar is all about the experiences and kids love it and wait for it all year!
