De-Clutter Your Media Cabinet {28 Days to De-Clutter}

Posted Feb 21 2013 12:01am
Media Cabinet Did you clean out your magazine rack yesterday ? Today we’re onto another realm of entertainment: the media cabinet! Chances are, you’ve got plenty of DVD’s and video games there just waiting for your attention. If you’re keeping up with these challenges, join our  28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page  and share your excitement with the rest of us as you accomplish each task! If you’re just joining us now, you can .

Can you believe I actually have a few VHS’s and one lonely little cassette tape in my media collection? True story. I should probably work at replacing them with their DVD/CD versions, but I haven’t yet, so still I hang on to them. (Don’t follow my example.)

Set your timer for 10 minutes, and…

BEGIN!

If your media collection is large, this might take more than 10 minutes, so just give it as much time as you’ve got. Go through your entire collection of CD’s, DVD’s, video games, and even your VHS’s and cassette tapes, and get rid of:

  • Anything obsolete that is of no value to you (which is most of it). For example, VHS’s for which you have no VCR. Or cassette tapes for which you have no tape player. Ahem.
  • Any video games that are not current (i.e., older versions or years).
  • Any video games that have not been played in the last year.
  • Movies that you didn’t really like.
  • Movies that you have never even opened. In years. Ahem.
  • Music that you don’t like and never listen to.
  • Movies your kids have grown past (don’t save ‘em for the grandkids because everything will be 100% digital by that point!).

Now place back into your cupboard everything that’s left, organizing it by type (video game, movie, etc.) and genre so it can easily be found.

If you have any current movies, music, and games in good condition, you can get a little money off of them by using Amazon.com’s Trade-In program.  I got rid of about 10 DVD’s when I was cleaning out our media cabinet, and I was able to quickly type in the titles and determine if it was worth it to send them off to Amazon or not. It turns out that 5 of them were enough to get me $6.50 in store credit! All I have to do is print out the shipping label Amazon.com provides, slap it on a box and send it off. Once they approve my trade-in, they’ll deposit the money in my Amazon account. Easy peasy!

Ready for more? Read on!

  • Get rid of those bulky cases! Store all disks in disk binders  to save on space and clutter. You could also store the disks in boxes of the appropriate size.
  • Corral remotes and controllers in a basket or box to keep them all in one place and accessible.
  • When it comes to movies, forget the physical DVD’s and go digital! No need to waste space unless it’s for a movie you really really want to have on hand.
  • Some of the ideas I pinned on my  28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board   for storing photo DVD’s will be applicable here as well.

If you completed today’s 10-minute task, I’d love to hear about it! Tell me all about it – and show me a picture – on the 28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page .
