Every Thanksgiving I love making Apple Pie. I think Apple Pie is one of my favorite desserts. My Mama Sue gave me a recipe of hers years ago and I have always loved her simple Apple Pie.
A couple of years ago I made some major changes to her delicious recipe and it has become a Thanksgiving hit!!!!
This year was no different. I had great reviews! I even got a few "this is the BEST Apple Pie I have ever had!"
Pie filling -
9 inch pie crust (store bought or homemade)
1/2 cup Sugar (I use Brown Sugar)
3 TBSP flour
1 tsp Cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
6 cups apples (you can use canned apples)
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/4 cup carmel (this year I left this out)
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup butter, melted
Mix brown sugar, flour and oats.
In a large bowl stir together sugar, flour, cinnamon, pecans and salt. Add apple slices and gently toss until apples evenly coated. Transfer mixture into pie crust. Sprinkle on crumb topping over apple mixture.
I usually pour half the crumb mixture and pour half the melted butter on top and then finish with the rest of the oats and butter.
Place pie on cookie sheet so nothing drips in the oven.
Cover with foil and bake at 375* for 25 minutes. Then remove foil and bake for an additional 25 - 30 minutes.
For additional crunch add some pecans on top of the pie after baking! Drizzle the carmel on the pie while it is hot!
