Perhaps it wasn’t exactly a hike, but this morning’s seven-mile brisk walk to Castle Island certainly did merit the consumption of a chocolate chip granola bar.
For those unfamiliar with it, the Boston chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club sponsors many local activities, including local walks (monthly calendar here ). From what I gathered, these outings are catered to ages 40+; if you think you might feel out of place, bring a friend or check out the AMC Boston Young Members site .
I chose the former option and brought with me a friend who shares my hunger for wellness. Everyone, meet the lovely Evona:

We arrived at the JFK/UMass station (MBTA red line) around 10:30 A.M. and followed this route in both directions:

We saw some nice things along the way that were deemed worthy of sharing:
Though the Castle Island snack bar is a popular spot for most visitors, wellness and clean-eating folks will probably want to avoid it. (Personally, I don’t even want to think about the grade of meat used in a $1.85 hamburger.) Evona and I instead had a lunch of all-natural peanut butter on Nature’s Promise organic 14-grain bread, along with apples, carrots and, of course, yesterday’s chocolate chip granola bars.
