The concept of acid/alkaline imbalance as the cause of multiple diseases is not new. In 1933 a New York Dr. William Howard Hay published a ground-breaking book, A New Health Era in which he proves that all disease is caused by “self-poisoning” due to acid accumulation in the body. Since then, the concept of acidic versus alkaline pH has been explored a lot further.
Human blood pH should be slightly alkaline ( 7.35 – 7.45 ). An acidic pH can occur from an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using up alkaline minerals. When acid-producing foods lower the body’s pH, the kidneys coordinate efforts to reduce that acidity. Bones release calcium and magnesium to reestablish alkalinity, and muscles are broken down to produce ammonia, which is a strongly alkaline substance. By the time the response is over, your bone minerals and broken down muscle get excreted in urine. If your diet does not contain enough minerals, a build up of acid in the cells can also occur. A blood pH of 6.9, which is only slightly acidic, can induce coma and death.
To maintain slightly alkaline pH balance, your diet should consist of 60% alkaline -forming foods and 40% acid-forming foods. To restore health after a disease or after following a poor diet, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods. Tables of acid and alkaline-forming foods are below.
The reason acidic pH is more common in our society is mostly due to the Standard American diet, which is far too high in acid-producing products like meat, sugar, dairy, and artificial processed junk foods, as well as coffee and soft drinks. The Standard American Diet is too low in alkaline producing foods like fresh vegetables.
PH is the abbreviation for potential hydrogen. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen rich the fluid is. The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline, anything below 7.0 is acidic. To test your pH levels, buy pH strips and follow their instructions.
An acidic pH balance can:
decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients
decrease the body’s ability to detoxify heavy metals
make tumor cells thrive
decrease energy production within the cells
make the body more susceptible to fatigue and illness.
decrease the body’s ability to repair damaged cells
