Best Friend Brunch

Posted Jan 22 2013 11:54am

Hello, hello! How is everyone on this freezing cold Tuesday morning?

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and MLK Day! I was lucky enough to have the day off yesterday, so I took a little break from blogging. Hope you guys didn’t miss me too much ;)

Luckily I’m back today with a full recap of my fabulous 3-day weekend! Buckle up, this is a long one…

Friday

Fabio had a “guys night out” on Friday (at a cigar bar with about 100 different types of burbon to taste…not exactly my scene) so I had the evening to myself :)

I debated going out to meet a few friends for drinks, but I knew I had a long weekend ahead of me and I needed to save my pennies as much as possible. So, I jumped into my PJs, made myself a giant bowl of roasted veggies for dinner (yummm) and spent the evening watching shows Fabio hates like Millionaire Matchmaker and Toddlers and Tiaras (oh what a wild night it was lol!)

My bowl of roasted veggies included 1 large carrot, 1 sweet potato, 1 regular potato, and some brussels sprouts in a spicy curry sauce :) The best part is I have a ton of leftovers for lunch today! Success!

I wound up falling asleep while watching The Help and then Harry Potter at around 11:00. I know, I know, exciting life I live over here haha.

Saturday

I woke up bright and early on Saturday morning with plans to make a scrumptious breakfast before a very busy day. I wound up making blueberry pancakes using this recipe , which has extra protein (and staying power!) from some non-fat Greek yogurt. Delicious!

After breakfast Fabio and I walked a few blocks to our dentist’s office (hooray for convenience!). It was quite busy at the dentists’ office (apparently it’s one of the few offices open on Saturdays, who knew?) so I had to wait a while to be seen. Luckily the gigantic stack of magazines kept me busy for a while.

The appointment went great and I’m happy to report I have no cavities! Horray!

After the dentist Fabio and I also headed to eye doctor where I got a pair of glasses!!

My first ones ever!! (Well, mostly. There was a pair I bought in middle school because I thought they were cool but then I never wore them OR needed them. They’re obviously lost now. Oops.)

I decided I needed glasses a few weeks ago when I realized it was getting more and more difficult to see things in the distance. When it got to the point where I couldn’t read the PowerPoint presentations at staff meetings and could barely see the TV guide in the living room at home, I knew it was time to go in to the eye doctor for a visit.

Luckily my friend Megan’s boyfriend, JR, works for Lens Crafters and was able to score a discount for Fabio and me (Fabio needed new glasses as well).

We both wound up with Ray Bans and are really happy with them!

What do you guys think?

We wound up spending pretty much the whole day at the dentist and the eye doctor, so when Fabio and I got home we ate a quick dinner and then headed over to my friend Britt’s apartment for a little birthday pregame for my other friend, Turk.

I didn’t take any pictures that night (sorry!) but it was a fun evening filled with brownies, cake balls, and plenty of drinking games. We went out in U St. after (to Marvin’s, which is always fun) and had the MOST DIFFICULT time getting a cab home. Apparently DC was swarming with people for the inauguration, so it took about 20 mins. to find a cab. Even then our usual $12 fare was jacked up to $40. So unfair! Oh well, it was a fun night out anyway.

Sunday

The highlight of my weekend was definitely Sunday, when I had brunch plans with friends from home and my friends from college. I felt so lucky to have two sets of friends come together and become friends with each other. I felt really lame and giddy, but it made me so happy to see one of my best friends from first grade chatting it up with my college roommate :) Seriously, it was fantastic.

Before brunch, my friends from home stopped by to park their car at my apartment and come in for a preliminary mimosa ;)

We had the champagne, orange juice, and a bit of cranberry-pomegranate juice set out.

Jack couldn’t wait for everyone to arrive!

Don’t the drinks look festive with a splash of cranberry-pomegranate juice?

I asked my friend Sam to take a look at my ankle to see if I’m in the clear to start running again.

Sam is in school to become a physical therapist so I wasn’t about to waste the opportunity to have it checked out! Lol. Unfortunately she said it’s still a bit swollen and I must have “done a number on it.” Drat. I might start running this week anyway if I’m feeling up to it though. We shall see…

Jack helped too of course.

Then it was off to Southern Hospitality for brunch, a fun southern-style place in Adams Morgan with bottomless mimosas for $14.

Here’s the group!

This pic of all my friends together makes me so happy (except I missed my New York girls of course!!)

I wound up ordering Fried Chicken Benedict which tasted AMAZING. It was boneless fried chicken served on a homemade biscuit (!!), topped with poached eggs and holandaise sauce. So good!

Here are my friends from home from left to right: me, Bianca, Hana, and Sam!

Here I am with Hana! Friends since first grade!

Here are my school friends from left to right: Britt, Lauren, Dana, and me :)

Such a fun brunch!

After brunch a few people came back to our apartment to watch the various football games. We continued our mimosa drinking for a while and then eventually switched to beers. It was a really fun day and I had so much fun with my friends :)

I spy Jack!!

Monday

I spent most of Monday recuperating from Sunday (definitely necessary) and hung out at home watching the inauguration (being thankful that I live on the other side of the river and didn’t have to deal with thousands of people crowding the streets), cleaning the apartment, and baking some nutella banana bread (using this recipe ).

Oops, looks like a piece went missing ;)

A little bit later I went to see Life of Pi in 3D with my dad and sister.

It was a great movie and I definitely recommend it, although I should warn you it’s pretty long (about 2.5 hours). I was glad to get some family time in!

Then I went home and watched Biggest Loser, obviously ;)

Phew! What a weekend, huh? Sorry for the long post…is anyone even reading this still?

Question of the day: Do you ever have two groups of friends come together? Do you get nervous that they won’t get along? Do you feel ridiculously happy when they wind up becoming friends with each other, or is that just me? Lol!
