Over the weekend, I partook in one of the most exciting and fun traditions I’ve ever witnessed: The American Cancer Society Relay For Life.
Each year, cancer survivors, along with their friends and family, join together at a local outdoor track, where they walk or run laps through the evening to celebrate life. “Because cancer never sleeps,” the event’s official Web site says, “relays are overnight.”
Last Friday night, my girls Becca, Brittany, Caitlin C., Evona and myself grabbed our sleeping bags and headed to the English High School football field in Jamaica Plain to show our support. From sundown until sunrise, we combined two things we love: Fitness and philanthropy.

The Luminaria: Illuminated bags with the name of someone who has battled cancer
Though I spent the remainder of the weekend feeling like my shins were on fire, I would absolutely participate in the Relay for Life again and plan to do so at the next opportunity. Not only is it a great way to raise money for cancer research, but it’s also an incredible bonding experience.
There are many realizations that I took away from the event, but here is one that I would like to pass on to you: Each of us gets one life. Take care of it.
It’s not too late to donate! If you would like to support the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, visit the fundraising page .
