All Those Food Storage Containers!! {28 Days to De-Clutter}

Posted Feb 04 2013 12:01am
Yesterday we all cleaned out our freezers  - or at least part of them - and today we’re ready to deal with one of those eternally frustrating areas of the kitchen. If you’re keeping up with these challenges, join our  28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page  and share your excitement with the rest of us as you accomplish each task! If you’re just joining us now, you can .

I know I’m not the only one who gets irritated with all those different food storage containers (you know, the kind where you put your leftovers) and their different lids. No matter if you buy matched sets or just re-use old butter tubs, each different size has a different lid. And each brand has a different size even if they look identical. Argh! Not to mention that somehow those different lids and bowls manage to grow legs and walk (or run!) away, never to be found again. It’s almost as frustrating as having orphaned socks !

So today we’re going to clean out that cupboard or drawer with all those different containers and lids. Wherever you store them, that’s where we’re headed today! Are you ready?

Set your timer for 10 minutes. Psyche yourself up, and…

Take each container and find its lid, and match them up. Make sure you have a lid for each container in your collection and vice versa. Don’t forget to look in the diswasher, the drying rack, the fridge, and the dirty dishes.

Once you sure you have matched up all the containers with their lids, set aside the orphans to deal with later.

Return your matching containers and lids to the cupboard or drawer where you store them. I like to store them in the following manner:

  • Containers and lids stored separately to save space.
  • Like shapes stacked together, the largest ones on the bottom. So all square containers go in a stack, all rounds together, etc.
  • Lids stacked on their sides, held in a shallow container. This way, it’s easy to flip through them to find the one you need.
  • Very small containers kept in a shallow bin so they don’t get lost.
  • Randomly shaped containers on their own shelf (or part of a shelf).

Dispose of any containers that are cracked, stained, or otherwise damaged. Be sure to recycle them if you can.

And you’re done! Way to go! If you’re ready for more… read on.

  • Consider purchasing a matching set of glass storage containers to cut down on waste and make storage easier. The good thing about glass is that it can go in the freezer, fridge, microwave and oven!
  • If you are limited on space and/or unsatisfied with your current lid storage, consider purchasing something like this shelf bracket  that goes on the door, or this one that sits on a shelf.   I’ve pinned even more great storage ideas on the 28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board . Or make your own from cereal boxes (or similar boxes if you don’t eat cereal): try this one made from the bottom of the box , or this one made from the whole thing.
  • Take the orphaned bowls and re-use them elsewhere in your house as storage. Mine are in my junk drawer, corralling things like shoelaces, rubber bands, paper clips and other random household stuff. Depending on their size, they can be used in the pantry or the hall closet to hold a multitude of different items that need containment.
  • Don’t throw away those leftover lids, either! I’ve found tons of creative craft ideas for them, and pinned them to the de-cluttering board . My favorite? Someone had the brilliant idea to take this embroidery hoop art and use plastic lids instead!

If you completed today’s 10-minute task, I’d love to hear about it! Tell me all about it – and show me a picture – on the 28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page .
