3 Month Gluten Free Vegan Diet Experiment

Posted Aug 31 2009 10:07pm

The truth comes out...

Turns out this Ginger Lemon Girl is at a very high risk for heart disease and stroke because my cholesterol and triglycerides are so incredibly high. I also have high blood pressure and I'm also overweight. I'm 31 my friends and I want to get healthy. I realize part of this is genetic, both of my parents suffer from the same ailments and my dad had a heart attack in his late 40's. While I can't control my genetics, I know that I can control my diet. I don't know that this experiment will work, but I'm SO very willing to try. I desperately want to be a healthy Ginger Lemon Girl. So 11 days ago I started a gluten free vegan diet. My doctor wants to put me on three name brand cholesterol medications... and I didn't like that idea. Not one bit.

So here's the challenge. I'm following a strict low fat, low sugar, gluten free vegan diet for 3 months. Then I will return to my doctor to have blood work done and see the results.

I'm also shooting for 30 minutes of exercise at least 4 days a week.

I started "sister" blog to document this gluten free vegan diet experience. If you're interested, please visit me at Vegan Peas and tell me what you think! I'd love to hear about your own experiences, your own journey to health, and what's on your plate these days.

Don't worry... there will still be MANY gluten free Ginger Lemon Girl recipes to come. As a matter of fact, I have one fantastic egg free, vegan gluten free yeast bread that will be posted within the next week! I can't wait to share that!

Until then, please share with me and share in my journey! Visit me at VeganPeas !

Excerpt from Vegan Peas Day 1 :

Why Vegan Peas?
I like peas. And peas are vegan. THANK GOODNESS.

The past few days I've been trying to think of all the wonderful foods I can still eat on a vegan diet. I need to lose weight. I need to SERIOUSLY lower my cholesterol and triglycerides and I really want to do it without medication, much to the chagrin of my family physician. I want to prove him wrong. I can do it. And I can only hope the vegan diet will work. I've tried everything in the past. Atkins. South Beach. Weight watchers. I've tried them all. The only thing I haven't done is turn to a vegetarian diet and we're going as far as vegan to remove all animal products from my diet. I'm also going to limit the amount of fruit I eat and cut all other sugars out of my diet. 3 months. Approximately 90 days.

And if it works? Well if it works... I may be a convert. I want to be healthy. I want to be at a healthy weight for me, and I want to be able to live worry free about my cholesterol and triglycerides. So here we go...

I would love to hear your comments and suggestions on how to make this journey easier.

Gluten Free, Soy Free Vegan. 3 months... I'm ready to go!
