What are the ten most essential tips for breaking free of the dieting trap and achieving lasting weight loss success?
Goodness knows that are lots and lots of easy healthy ways to lose weight – once you get your head on straight and commit to saying good-bye to diets and committing to a healthy lifestyle. But, according to weight loss expert , there are ten essential things you need to do to lay the foundation for living the rest of your life in a naturally thin body.
These tips have little to do with finding the right diet for you for quick weight loss.
Essential Tips for Lasting Weight Loss
Why? Because diets promising quick weight loss don’t work - at least not for very long.
What happens even if you do manage to lose some weight on a rapid weight loss diet?
You’re back to your pre-diet weight before you know what hit you. That’s what. (At least that’s the way it always worked for me.)
Weight Loss Can Be Difficult or It Can Be Easy – The Choice is Really Yours
Here’s my interpretation of her weight loss tips that are based on decades of experience helping people with their loss of weight struggles.
1. Stop Trying So Hard. Every time you psych yourself up to lose weight and turn your diet into a major obsession, eventually your enthusiasm fades and you end up right back where you started before the “big diet event.” It’s like the law of physics that says what goes up must come down.
Instead of repeating this vicious cycle: diet – lose weight – binge – gain back weight – repeat; Think about losing weight like it’s just another routine task on your to do list. Don’t make it such a big deal. When it comes to lasting weight loss slow and steady wins every time.
2. Give Yourself a Break. Get realistic and cut yourself some slack. Don’t tell yourself, “I’m going to lose 30 pounds in 30 days.” Instead say, “I’m going to maintain my ideal weight by learning to live a naturally thin life.” The only successful weight loss is weight loss that lasts. What good are all those quick tips for weight loss if you end up putting the weight right back on?
3. Acknowledge the Risks and Dangers of Fast Weight Loss. Starvation will not work. Your body will fight back and win. Fast weight loss diets attack your body’s will to survive causing major stress. An extreme calorie deprivation diet or quick weight loss diet – will cause your body to respond by slowing down your metabolism and holding on to fat for dear life.
4. Downsize Your Portions. If you hate dieting and want to lose weight in a reasonable time without a lot of struggle or emotional rebellion, simply decrease your portions and eat a little less every day. Turn in your membership in the all-you-can-eat club and learn to stop eating when you’ve had enough. You’ll be amazed at how quick and effective this one easy healthy weight loss tip can be over time. I’ve had more success with using smaller dishes and eating just a little less at every meal than I ever imagined.
5. Make Living a Healthy Naturally Thin Life a Lifetime Pursuit. Living thin naturally comes from adopting a healthy lifestyle instead of going on “another diet.” You must find a way of eating and living that you can do forever if you want lasting weight loss success. If you are thinking of adopting a behavior that you can’t imagine doing ever – don’t bother.
6. Learn to Manage Your Emotions. How many times have runaway emotions or boredom derailed your weight loss efforts? When your emotions are out of control and you’re tempted to turn to food for comfort, distract yourself – take a walk, clean something, call a friend, have a cup of tea, do some yoga, have a bath, meditate, write in a journal, read, watch a funny movie – until the feelings pass. (They will.) For more on Ending Emotional Eating .
7. Eat The Foods You Love. Let yourself have the foods you love, but in reasonable amounts. If you are eating plenty of high fiber, nutritious, high volume foods you can enjoy a reasonable amount of the foods you love and still be thin. However, you may not want your fun foods because nutritious high fiber foods fill you up with fewer calories and leave you feeling much less hungry. This is one of those healthy weight loss tips that benefits everyone who is trying to lose weight.
8. Stop Feeling Self-conscious. Stop concerning yourself with what other people think. So, maybe people are looking at you and thinking something less-than-kind. But, guess what? That’s their problem; not yours. Learn to stop taking other people’s behavior personally. Focus on your mission of getting happy, healthy and naturally thin – not on what others may or may not be thinking.
9. Find Easy Swaps and Substitutes. Determine ways to eat fewer calories that don’t feel like deprivation. For example, a York Peppermint Pattie has 140 calories and 2.5 grams of fat; a couple of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have 210 calories and 13 grams of fat. Make this exchange everyday for a year and you would lose 7 pounds.
Some easy substitutions for me include using nonfat Greek yogurt in place of sour cream, low-fat mayonnaise instead of regular, salsa instead of ketchup, and mustard instead of mayonnaise.
10. Take a Walk. According to world renowned Olympic gymnast coach, Béla Károlyi, the best overall healthy activity for the non-sports professional is walking. (How’s that for a world class healthy weight loss tip?)
