What Are the Back Pain Treatment Options Available?

Posted Sep 12 2012 7:52am
Back pain treatments restore functioning of the spine and enhance the quality of your life. Non-surgical orthopedic back pain treatments involve minimal risk, less downtime and fast recovery.

Back pain, one of the most prevalent medical issues, can cause great discomfort in daily life. It restricts one’s freedom of movement, creates stress and reduces productivity. Muscle strains, arthritis, disc degeneration, bulging discs, injuries of the lower back area, overweight, sedentary lifestyle and poor posture are various reasons that cause back pain. However, with proper and timely medical diagnosis and treatment, you can achieve good posture and wellbeing. Many people prefer less invasive non-surgical procedures for back pain treatment. There are effective back pain treatment options available.  You need to approach a reliable pain management center for result-oriented back pain treatment.

Understand Various Back Pain Treatment Options

Back pain treatment is mainly provided to treat lumbar muscle strain, spinal stenosis, lumbar spine arthritis, spondylolisthesis, osteoporosis and ruptured disc. Comprehensive back pain management programs are recommended to treat the root causes of back pain and provide lasting relief. Depending on the patient’s condition and severity of the back pain, personalized treatments are provided. Some of the treatment procedures are:

Prolotherapy –
Treatment involves the injection of dextrose solution or sugar water into the tendon or ligament at the joint to the bone. This procedure increases blood supply and transfers nutrients efficiently to stimulate the ligaments or tendons for a self-repair process. Four to six treatment sessions are required for effective back pain relief.

Injections (epidural steroid, trigger point and facet joint) – These are all outpatient procedures. Epidural steroid injections are given with or without sedation to provide relief from lumbar spine nerve discomforts. Trigger point injections provide relief from occasional as well as chronic back pain. Trigger points are marked for injection after numbing the area with local anesthesia. Facet joint injection involves injecting a steroid medication into the facet joint that will help the patient to perform physical therapy treatment without pain. It is also used to diagnose the cause and location of the pain accurately.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – This treatment uses electrical current of low voltage to stimulate affected nerve fibers to reduce blocks that prevent signals from being sent to the brain.

Manual techniques – Manipulation of muscles and joint mobilization are done using hands-on techniques. The procedure also increases range of motion, eliminates inflammation of soft tissues and improves flexibility and movement.

Physical therapy – Many advanced physical therapy devices are used to perform pain relieving therapeutic exercises. Massage, ultrasound and traction are also included in physical therapy treatment.

Spinal manipulation –
This therapeutic spinal manipulative therapy provides relief from musculoskeletal discomfort.

Spinal decompression –
In spinal decompression therapy, negative pressure is created within the affected discs that pulls back the herniated disc material and stimulates blood supply along with adequate intake of oxygen and other nutrients. The treatment facilitates effective healing of herniated or degenerated discs.
