I know that most people following this blog don’t work in Virginia, and therefore aren’t members of the Virginia Society for Healthcare Marketing and Public Relations (VSHMPR). But, where ever you live and work, there is most likely an association of healthcare marketers that you can join.
Last Friday I attended the fall conference for VSHMPR. It looked like there were maybe 60 healthcare marketing professionals in attendance, each of whom had given up the day in order to network with peers from around the state and learn more about social media (the focus of the conference). My sense is that everyone there learned a great deal, and left with contacts and resources for learning even more.
Although I do webinars and presentations on the use of social media in healthcare, I picked up some valuable tips from the presenters at Friday’s VSHMPR confernece. The world of social media is so vast, and is moving so rapidly, that it takes a concerted effort to keep pace. I’ve often said that I have yet to meet a social media expert. This is a moving target and very few of us are actually experts. More likely, we’re enthusiasts or social media evangelists – people who have recognized the value of the phenomenon and have jumped on the bandwagon.
If you work in healthcare marketing and don’t belong to your state or regional healthcare marketing society, I encourage you to join and take an active part in the learning opportunities that it offers, whether those are webinars or one day conferences. There’s great value in having the chance to spend a day with peers and hear from them the stories of their successes. Probably more so than the presentations, I place a high value on the sharing of information that goes on at these gatherings. After all, that’s why I started this online community for healthcare marketers!
