US Develops a Strategy for EMR Certification

Purpose and Goals                

The purpose of The Commission is to create an efficient, credible, sustainable mechanism for the certification of healthcare information technology products. The goals of product certification are:

  • To reduce the risk of HIT investment by providers
  • To ensure interoperability of HIT products with emerging local and national health information infrastructures
  • To enhance the availability of HIT incentives from public and private purchasers/payers
  • To accelerate the adoption of robust, interoperable HIT throughout the US healthcare system                

Organization and Governance

The Commission will represent all stakeholders and provide strategic governance of the initiative. The duties of the Commissioners will be as follows:

  • Ensure full representation, objectivity and credibility of the certification process
  • Finalize the organizational goals, principles and scope of the initiative
  • Provide directional guidance to, and review the reports of, various councils and workgroups
  • Approve the final certification criteria and processes
