UPDATE: Senator Ben Nelson changes his mind

Senator Ben Nelson

the "looks like I screwed up" face

The moderate Democrat – Ben Nelson, who provided the crucial 60th vote for the Senate health care bill , has been criticized because Nebraska was exempted paying any cost of a proposed expansion of Medicaid. This stirred up quite a controversy within the Senate – some Senators in fact questioned the legality of such a provision.

All other states would have been expected to pay off Nebraska’s portion of the tab after the first few years.

Ever since Nelson has been arguing that he never wanted a ’special deal’ for Nebraska and that he wants all states protected from burdensome new costs.

Obviously that didn’t quiet the controversy so Nelson took it one step further and on Friday January 15th he asked for the deal to be withdrawn and replaced with a provision treating all states equally.

All this beckons us to ask – How does a Senator – elected by his state to represent them; get away with such blatant lies without any intervention?
