Sleep Labs – Will Tele-Sleep Monitoring Phase Some Out Now that CPT Codes And Insurance Coverage is Expanding for Home Units

Posted Sep 26 2009 10:20pm

The WatchPAT already has approval from CMS and now has a CPT Code to bill.  Blue Cross has also stated coverage would be provided for the sleep image analysis device.  Let me see, how many ways can one analyze their sleep, many according to the data report created.  A good night’s sleep is something on everyone’s mind it seems today with current economic conditions.

Now, sleep with this devices and a data report will analyze your snoring habits, how you sleep, which side, how much oxygen you are getting and so on.  It does seem less expensive than maintaining a sleep lab though.

Most do not really think about their sleeping habits unless they are going without, or have a partner who hears them snore all night.  This looks like a new device to connect to a PHR too, like HealthVault eventually so all your sleeping scores are maintained in one place.

UnitedHealthcare is a unit of UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH). It is one of the five largest US medical insurers, covering 70 million people. Itamar said that the coverage follows granting of a code for the WatchPAT by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in March. However, a price has still not been set by CMS, so the WatchPAT's profitability cannot yet be calculated.
