Health systems across the nation, including Geisinger Health Plans , are recognizing National Hospital and Health System Pharmacy Week which runs from October 17th through the 23rd. Pharmacy Week is dedicated to hard working pharmacists who play such an important role in patient care.
Geisinger Health System specifically is taking an active role in this recognition. Geisinger’s Pharmacy Department has organized events within the hospitals as well as in the communities they serve. There is a community brown bag medication review program and they are introducing the Vial of Life program. According to the Geisinger website, the Vial of Life is a prescription vial or bag that contains critical medical information designed to assist emergency persons in administering the appropriate medical care. The vial should be taken to doctor visits and can be used to help healthcare employees manage patient care.
The site also offers some valuable tips on safe medication use from the Geisinger Pharmacy Department. The first tip talks about keeping an accurate and up-to-date list of all of the medications you take, including prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs. Always ask three important questions, including:
What is this medication for?
How and when do I take this medication?
What side effects should I expect while taking this drug?
In addition to asking yourself these important questions, talk to your doctor and pharmacist about any possible drug interactions to drugs you may already be taking. Pharmacists are experts in medicine and can provide valuable information just by popping into your local pharmacy. Take the time to recognize your helpful pharmacist this week.
