PPO Health Insurance

Posted Oct 21 2010 7:17pm

Understanding preferred provider organizations (PPO) versus health maintenance organizations is very important if you are shopping around for health insurance.  Both offer their own benefits but it really depends on the consumer’s individual needs.

PPO health insurance allows the consumer to choose to see a general practitioner or a medical specialist without a referral from a primary care doctor.  PPO members are not required to remain within the PPO network but consumers may save money if they choose to stay within the network.  HMO’s require consumers to remain within network unless it’s for an emergency away from home.

Another major contrast between PPOs and HMOs is that with an HMO you do not have an individual or family deductible to meet.  PPOs often require members to meet a nominal deductible, including hospitalization, and sometimes has large copays when compared to HMOs.  It’s hard to say which plan is better since it entirely depends on the circumstances of the individual.  Do your research before making a decision when finding health insurance .
