Nuance and IBM Collaborate to Apply IBM’s “Watson” Analytics Technology to Healthcare

Posted Feb 22 2011 12:10pm

The following announcement came from Nuance:

I am excited to share with you some more very important news that was announced this morning by Nuance and IBM. Nuance Healthcare announced that it will be expanding its joint research and development work with IBM through a new initiative that will combine IBM’s Watson technology with Nuance’s Voice and Clinical Language Understanding (CLU) Technologies to deliver breakthrough voice and analytics solutions for the healthcare industry.

This is an exciting initiative for Nuance Healthcare to be a part of because, as showcased in the recent IBM Watson vs. Jeopardy challenge, Watson represents a major advancement in what is called “Deep Question Answering” (QA) technology – the ability of a computer to understand natural human speech and text inquiries that pertain to a limitless range of topics, and to make informed judgments about requests.  Recognizing the tremendous value that Watson can bring to healthcare, Nuance and IBM have teamed to co-develop solutions that will transform vast amounts of clinical data into actionable information across the continuum of care.  This endeavor is intended to unlock important medical knowledge and facts buried within huge volumes of disparate clinical data repositories, providing healthcare provider organizations, payers and individual physicians a new level of medical intelligence ( click here to view an enclosed document for some additional background on this strategic initiative).

This research and technology initiative is an extension of a previously announced collaboration between Nuance and IBM in which the companies began working together to advance Nuance’s state-of-the-art CLU technologies.  For more information on Nuance’s CLU solutions visit: http://www.nuance.com/for-healthcare/resources/clu/index.htm

We are very excited about this unique initiative and what it could mean for healthcare IT as we work to unlock the critical clinical intelligence buried in all of the unstructured data contained in our healthcare system.  We will be working closely with IBM over the next few years on several key medical intelligence solutions and you will see more important announcements about this technology in the future.

Sincerely,

Janet Dillione
Executive vice president and general manager
Nuance Healthcare
