New Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans

Posted Jun 15 2010 4:59pm

As of June 1, 2010 there have been two additional Medigap plans added to Medicare supplement insurance options.  The article “The ABC’s of the new Medigap Plans” by Kimberly Lankford gives some details.

As these two plans are added, four plans will be taken away which includes E, H, I and J.  If you currently have one of these policies you can still keep it and nothing else will change.  It’s worth your time to look into the new plans which can offer lower premiums.  Both new plans are somewhat similar to the most commonly chosen Plan F, but with different coverage options.

Be sure to weigh potential savings with out-of-pocket costs and benefits as you consider switching to one of the new plans.  If you are within 6 months of signing up for Medicare Part B for the first time, you can choose any Medicare supplement insurance plan regardless of your current health status.  If you delay and end up missing the open enrollment time frame, or you choose to switch plans, then you can be denied coverage for health status.  There are some insurance companies who offer plans M and N regardless of pre-existing conditions.
