Health IT Legislation Link:  National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL)

In an 18 month period from 2007 to 2008, there were 132 healthcare bills passed by state legislatures containing provisions regarding healthcare technology. This new legislation recognizes the value of technology initiatives and considers healthcare technology as an integral part of Health Reform. Legislation enacted during this period covered the following topics:

  • Comprehensive health care
  • E-Prescribing
  • Electronic Records
  • Financing
  • Health Information Exchange
  • Planning/Study Commissions
  • Privacy and Security
  • Resolutions
  • Miscellaneous

A report of the enacted legislation, produced through NCSL's Forum on State Health Policy Leadership is available for download here. The study analyzed five major trends: planning, financing, privacy laws, promoting health information exchange, and advancing adoption of the enacted legislation.

The National Conference of State Legislatures is the bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the states, commonwealths and territories.
