HSA Qualified Medical Expenses

This is the time of year when people are applying for HSA eligible health plans with the most advantageous effective dates of January 1.  One of the things that is important to understand when applying for an HSA , is what medical expenses are considered to be qualified medical expenses and thus will go against your annual deductible.

Below is an updated list of what medical expenses are considered to be “HSA qualified medical expenses” for 2012.  This list is not 100% comprehensive.  There may be other types of expenses that are covered under specific circumstances

Alcoholism – treatment programs
Ambulance service
Wheelchair
Birth Control Pills
Services for the Blind

Capital Expenditures – home modifications for the handicapped
Car Equipment – to accommodate wheelchair and/or handicapped
Childbirth Preparation Classes

Contact Lenses – replacement insurance, not the filling of prescription for disposable lenses for example

Services and Equipment for hearing impaired

Doctor’s Fees

Drugs – prescription or over-the-counter (over-the counter drugs are eligible only if prescribed by doctor)
