HIT Activity Map: United States of America

Posted Oct 30 2008 3:22pm

This is a very interesting project taking place in the USA to track IT projects across the country. The importance of this type of work is the ability to synchronize the work taking place across jurisdictions and reduce duplication. The problems are not unique to any specific state, so it makes sense to keep track of the work being done.

Similarly, Canada could benefit from this type of approach. Canada Health Infoway - provides a similar outline of projects in the 2004/2005 annual report (.pdf) which describes on page 3-4 the projects that Infoway has funded. However there are a great number of projects that operate independent of Infoway funding and it would be very useful to see those project descriptions in a single map with the ability to drill down to a project summary.

"The HIT Dashboard is the result of a collaborative effort between HIMSS and the Center for Health Information and Decision Systems (CHIDS) at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. The project was undertaken due to an identified need by many constituents currently serving the health information technology (HIT) industry. The HIT Dashboard provides a color-coded, easy-to-read visual interface that tracks over 500 state, federal, and private HIT initiatives. Our team has been collecting data on several HIT projects for over a year and will continue to update quarterly. Link: HIT Activity Map: United States of America.
