Healthcare's Powerful, old-fashioned tool: Human Touch

Posted Oct 31 2011 9:47am

From Ted at www.ted.com

Modern medicine is in danger of losing a powerful, old-fashioned tool: human touch. Physician and writer Abraham Verghese describes our strange new world where patients are merely data points, and calls for a return to the traditional one-on-one physical exam.

The iPatient in the Computer... Disjunction between patient's perception and physician.

When the introduction of EMRs for patient charting arrived, with the need to learn computer usage techniques, many believed they would sacrifice face-to-face patient interaction with facing the computer screen. As more clinicians become familiar with technology, this problem will pass and the old-fashioed tool: Human Touch will prevail.
