Half of Americans Might Have a Pre-Existing Condition

Posted Jan 19 2011 2:22pm

According to the article Half of Americans May Have ‘Pre-Existing Conditions’ by Mary Silver on TheEpochTimes.com, up to 50% of Americans under the age of 65 have some sort of pre-existing health condition making it harder for them to find affordable health insurance.  This is based on a report from The Department of Health and Human Services named “At Risk: Pre-Existing Conditions Could Affect 1 in 2 Americans”.  Pre-existing condition is defined as a potentially life threatening ailment such as cancer, heart disease asthma or diabetes.

The department survey also showed that far more Americans with pre-existing conditions have no health insurance compared to those with no pre-existing conditions which seems very backwards.  Provisions in the new health care reform bill are going to protect people by not allowing health insurance companies from denying coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Another interesting finding from the report was that there is a good amount of discrimination in the work place of those with pre-existing conditions since this type of employee can drive up costs of the employers health care plans.  By the time health care reform is fully implemented the plan is to have everyone covered and stop this type of discrimination.  Whether you’re in Miami or Seattle, health insurance should be easier for all Americans across the nation to receive.
