FDA Approves First Generic Version of Actos Used to Treat Diabetes 2 to Help Control Blood Sugar

Actos (pioglitazone hydrochloride) is taken as a secondary treatment for those who do not respond and get a large enough glucose  drop with one drug.  The generic versions of pioglitazone and pioglitazone plus metformin are manufactured by Mylan and there is warning that the drug could worsen heart failure and has a risk of contributing to bladder cancer.  BD



The US Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) has approved the first generic version of the prescription drug Actos , which is used by adults with type 2 diabetes to help control blood glucose levels.

The FDA granted a license to produce generic Actos, also know pioglitazone, to Morgantown, West Virginia-based Mylan Pharmaceuticals , HealthDay News reported on Friday. They will produce the medication in 15mg, 30mg, and 45mg strengths.
