A few weeks ago I was in a hotel in the UK and it was cold outside. I encountered a sink with one faucet for hot water and one for cold. The best I could do to wash my hands with warm but not scalding hot water was to move my hands quickly between two streams of water and extremes of temperature. This got me thinking about IT strategy and pursuing strategies of extremes: growth vs. cost cutting or quality vs. capacity or openness vs. security.
