As I mentioned earlier this week, I attended Premier’s Governance Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker Monday evening. My post on Wednesday discussed what Clinton had to say about healthcare reform and his thoughts on what went wrong. You can read that post here.
Bill Clinton also weighed in on the life of the filibuster in Congress. To put it mildly, Clinton is NOT a fan of the filibuster.
In fact, Clinton says members of Congress are not using the filibuster as it was originally intended. He feels putting such power in the hands of a single person is frankly scary.
Bill Clinton says Congress needs to get rid of the filibuster as soon as possible. Clinton believes it is hurting the American public, and essentially crippling government leaders and preventing them from getting their work done. Hopefully someone in Washington will hear the advice.
Clinton is not alone when it comes to his feelings on the filibuster.Another blog had this to say about the filibuster just this week:
Senators relish their personal power and they honor their fellow senators by maintaining the filibuster rule. But by doing so, they dishonor the principles of democracy and they dishonor the people’s demand for them to govern.
I think it is time to listen and get rid of rules that just don’t work and those that are outdated. The filibuster needs to go so lawmakers can get back to work.
I hope Bill Clinton shares his thoughts with others in Washington.
