Beyond the Point of No Return - E-Health and EMRs Go Mainstream

Posted Oct 30 2008 3:21pm

If you are a regular visitor to CanadianEMR, you will have noticed a significant reduction in regular postings to the CanadianEMR web site over the past month. This was partly a natural summer slowdown, but in large part due to the significant amount of work currently being done to ready the new version of the web site which will launch very soon. CanadianEMR also achieved a milestone last week as a result of your continued interest and support - over 100,000 page views and 850 postings and discussions.

Expect to see lots of new content, discussions, EMR comparisons, vendor information and as we work to build better tools for physicians, a national EMR rating system (similar to a tripadvisor®) so that physicians can better identify EMR systems that meet their needs and make more informed decisions. We also have a number of new and useful services planned for rollout based on feedback of physicians and experts advisors from across Canada.

Why do I think we are beyond the point of no-return in terms of eHealth and EMR? I was revieing a UK web site that I regularly visit called E-Health Insider. "The Irish Government is planning to commit almost half a billion Euros of investment to e-health when it publishes its National Development Plan for health. Investment will be focused on systems that improve patient care in hospital or community settings, with a particular focus on supporting community-based health professionals After a lengthy planning and tendering process, the new investment programme will be formally announced when Ireland unveils its Health Information and Communication Technology sub-programme in the NDP for 2007-2013. The six-year investment plan is intended to provide the funding to deliver Ireland's National Health Information Strategy, first published in 2004. The document is expected to lay out detailed updated plans for implementing the 2004 e-health strategy." Link: E-Health Europe :: Ireland to invest Euros 500m in e-health. E-Health is an international phenomenon - momentum is developing worldwide to automate health care.

When reading my mail this evening, I paged through a conference program being offered in Toronto by the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association entitled, " Informatics Everywhere: Celebrating the Diversity of Informatics Practice". Presentations include 'Web 2.0 and the implications for health care', 'Analyzing Activity at the Nursing Station - Making a case for Electronic Documentation and Decentralization' and 'Integrating Telehealth Services into Main Stream Care Delivery: Using momentum to achieve program success.' Our nursing colleagues have made significant strides in adopting and integrating technology into their practice settings. Take a look at the program - it is interesting to see the work that is being done in the nursing arena.

The momentum to adopt Information Technology in hospital, community and private practice settings has never been greater, thus the topic of this posting - Beyond the point of No Return...
