The AMA is taking issue with whether these items are “reasonably preventable” as well as questioning that the ruling may cause hospitals to avoid caring for Medicare patients vulnerable to items on the list.
The Medicare no-pay list includes:
* Surgical site infections following certain elective procedures
* Legionnaires’ disease
* Extreme blood sugar derangement
* A collapse of the lung resulting from medical treatment
* Delirium
* Ventilator-associated pneumonia
* Deep vein thrombosis/Pulmonary Embolism
* Staph infection in the bloodstream
* Disease associated with Clostridium difficile infection
* Legionnaires’ disease
