Why can’t I paper file my taxes if I have a tax-preparer do my taxes? Why am I required to e-file? Thank you.

Posted Apr 04 2012 2:16pm

Starting January 1, 2012, most tax-preparers are required to e-file federal tax forms because of the Paperwork Reduction Act. The Paperwork Reduction Act was created so that all forms and paperwork throughout the federal government can be assessed in one location. Its goal is to reduce the amount of paperwork handled by the federal government and in turn, by the general public.

Tax-preparers can request an undue hardship waiver so that they may paper file for their clients. Generally, this form is due by February 15th of the year for which the waiver is being requested.
