U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will travel to the Chicagoland area for a series of events on Thursday, Oct. 24 and Friday, Oct. 25.

On Thursday morning, Duncan will attend the grand opening of Wheeling High School’s Nanotechnology Lab at 11:30 a.m. in Wheeling, Ill. The lab is the first of its kind at a public high school in the United States. Nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Duncan will tour the lab and participate in a discussion with students and staff about the importance of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Duncan will also highlight the cutting-edge technology and resources that Wheeling High provides students to learn about and engage with science, along with the importance of a strong STEM education. This event will be live streamed at www.d214.eduvision.tv/watchlive .

There will be a media availability following the event.

President Obama has articulated a clear priority for STEM education, challenging American students to move from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math. Specifically, he has called on the nation to develop, recruit, and retain 100,000 excellent STEM teachers over the next 10 years.

Later in the afternoon, Secretary Duncan will participate in a discussion entitled, “ Implementing the Common Core: The Politics & Promise of Higher Learning Standards ,” at the University of Chicago. At the event, hosted by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, Duncan will stress the need to assure that America’s children receive an education that prepares them for success in college and careers. There will be a media availability following the event.

To date, 45 states and the District of Columbia voluntarily have opted to participate in the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The federal government has not been involved in the design of these standards, which were developed in a partnership between the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association. You can learn more at the Common Core State Standards website .

On Friday morning, Duncan will join more than a dozen college presidents from Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) for a closed meeting hosted by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). During this meeting, Duncan will brief participants on President Obama’s higher education agenda and gather feedback on those proposals.
