How much do you really know about drugs? An Education Policy Briefing, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, will let you test your knowledge at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, in the Department’s Barnard Auditorium. The Department has teamed up with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to help launch National Drug Facts Week, Nov. 8-14. The new awareness campaign for teens brings science into the discussion about drugs and addresses how schools and organizations can use the week to promote drug education and prevention.

Kevin Jennings, assistant deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS), and NIDA’s Cindy Miner, deputy director, Office of Science Policy and Communications, and Carol Krause, chief of the Public Information and Liaison Branch, Office of Science Policy and Communications, will discuss events planned for National Drug Facts Week.

National Drug Facts Week is a health observance week for teens that aims to shatter the myths about drugs and drug abuse. It is an extension of NIDA’s popular annual Drug Facts Chat Day—held every fall—where 40 scientists answer questions about drugs from teens all over the country via computer. Young people are frequently ill-informed about drugs and the affects of drug use. Through community-based events and activities on TV, the Web and through contests, NIDA is working to encourage teens to get factual answers from scientific experts about drugs and drug abuse.
