Top 10 Things Every Hoya Nursing Student Should Know

Posted Sep 19 2011 4:01pm

Georgetown University's overall mission is to provide student-centered, excellent professional education in the Jesuit tradition.

Nursing@Georgetown students are part of a rich tradition both within the School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS) and Georgetown University as a whole. Here is a list of 10 things that every Hoya nursing student should know about their school:

  1. Georgetown was founded in 1789, making it the oldest Catholic, Jesuit institution of higher learning in the country.
  2. The School of Nursing & Health Studies began in 1903 with the goal of educating nurses for the recently established Georgetown University Hospital, which opened in 1898. In 1951, the nursing school was integrated into the university as a separate school.
  3. As in the past, Jesuit values guide the school today. The school operates using a values-based framework .
  4. Dean Martin Y. Iguchi, Ph.D., leads the School of Nursing & Health Studies, which houses more than 140 full- and part-time faculty who teach around 900 undergraduate and graduate students.
  5. In 2011, Georgetown added its first online degree program through the launch of Nursing@Georgetown.
  6. Currently, nursing is one of the fours academic departments that make up the School of Nursing & Health Studies; the three others are Health Systems Administration, Human Science, and International Health.
  7. The Hoya is not Georgetown’s mascot, but rather its nickname. Many years ago, when all Georgetown students were required to study Greek and Latin, the university’s teams were nicknamed “The Stonewalls.” It is suggested that a student, using Greek and Latin terms, started the cheer “Hoya Saxa,” which translates into “What Rocks.” The name proved popular and the term “Hoyas” was eventually adopted for all Georgetown teams.
  8. The mascot is an English bulldog named Jack , who frequently appears at Georgetown sporting events and ranks as the eighth most famous dog in pop culture, according to the American Kennel Club .
  9. First Lady Laura Bush received an honorary degree from Georgetown at the NHS commencement ceremony in 2003.
  10. Georgetown’s president is John J. DeGioia, and its motto is “Utraque Unum,” which means “both into one.”
