NASA started this contest to demonstrate spinoffs of NASA technology . They wanted children in grades 3 through 8 to demonstrate how NASA technology that was originally used for space travel is now used in our everyday lives. The children have answered. By my count there are nearly 70 entries and NASA is encouraging the public to vote on their favorites entries .

A little boy joy bubbled in my chest when I learned that Optimus Prime and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) had partnered for the NASA OPTIMUS PRIME Video Contest . NASA has been around since 1958, but Optimus is no spring chicken-- he was originally released in the mid-eighties when I was a spring chicken clamoring for the latest Transformer toys.
The trailer for the latest Transformers movie sequel features a fictional account of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing where the astronauts discover a number of inactive Transformers. NASA considers Optimus Prime a kindred spirit. Specifically:
