Smoking and Pregnancy: Why You Shouldn't Lie

Posted Jan 10 2011 12:00am
Don't lie about smoking when you are pregnant. Period. According to a study released by the American Journal of Epidemiology nearly ¼ of all pregnant women who smoke lie about it to their providers. What causes these women not disclose their lifestyle habits is unknown. It is assumed that either women are embarrassed or don’t understand the consequences of withholding this information.

Cigarettes contain more than 2,500 chemicals. These chemicals combined with decreased oxygen supply to a baby while smoking can lead to many serious health risks including:Ectopic pregnancies Placental abruption Placental previa Vaginal bleeding Still birth Underweight baby Premature birth Birth defects (cleft lip, etc.) Additionally, babies who are born prematurely and underweight have serious risks for brain damage, lung disease, and other preventable conditions. In order for a doctor or a midwife to provide appropriate care to a patient, all aspects of the prenatal history must be disclosed. Hiding a history of smoking from a provider may result in inadequate care for a mother and baby.   Fore more information on smoking cessation please visit www.smokefree.gov
