Senior Officials to Participate in National Rural Education Association Conference

U.S. Department of Education officials, John White, deputy assistant secretary for rural outreach, Brad Jupp, senior program advisor for teacher quality initiatives and Kwasi Asare, associate director for the office of education technology, will attend the 102nd National Rural Education Convention and Research Symposium in Branson, Mo. The conference brings together an organization of rural school administrators, teachers, board members, regional service agency personnel, researchers, business and industry representatives and others interested in maintaining the vitality of rural school systems across the country.

On Thursday, White will co-lead a pre-conference session entitled “Turning Around Low-Performing Schools: A Rural Perspective.” In his remarks, he will present and respond to questions about the Department’s future planning for rural education.

On Friday morning, White and Asare will speak during part two of the National Rural Education Tech Summit where they will discuss the elements of the U.S. Department of Education’s national technology plan and how technology is used to improve and broaden instruction in America’s rural schools. At noon, Jupp will give the luncheon speech on the Department’s recently launched TEACH Campaign ( www.teach.gov ).

On Saturday morning, John Easton, Director of the Institute of Education Sciences, will address rural education researchers as they set their national research agenda for 2011.
