Secretary Duncan, Jill Biden to Visit Classroom, Participate in Roundtable on Educating Children of Military Families

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Dr. Jill Biden will be at Fort Belvoir Elementary School on Tuesday, June 22, visiting a second grade classroom and later participating in a roundtable discussion on the unique educational needs of children of military members.

After visiting the classroom, Secretary Duncan and Dr. Biden will join Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn, U.S. Army Chief of Staff General George Casey, and U.S. Rep. Jim Moran in a roundtable with military families to discuss challenges impacting military children such as student mobility and the effects of deployment. Military parents from each branch of America's armed forces will share their experiences. Also participating in the roundtable will be Fort Belvoir Elementary School Principal Jane Wilson, Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools Dr. Jack Dale, and Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Col. Jerry Blixt. Press availability with Secretary Duncan and Rep. Moran will follow.

Fort Belvoir Elementary School is located on the Fort Belvoir Army Installation and enrolls 1,211 students, 98 percent of whom are children of military families quartering at Fort Belvoir.
