New Research Confirms Prognostic Value of CT Angiography

Posted Nov 27 2010 12:00am
The CONFIRM registry ( Coronary CT Angiography Evaluation for Clinical Outcomes International Multicenter) presented findings at the American Heart Association 2010 Scientific Sessions which, for the first time, provides strong evidence for the use of CTA in patients with symptoms of coronary artery disease.

A Cardiac CT Angiogram is a non-invasive scan which reconstructs a 3D image of the heart via computer. The image provides a detailed view of the presence of plaque, narrowing or stenosis or the arteries, and calcium scoring.

The CONFIRM registry has enrolled and studied 27,000 patients, providing a large enough sample size to have strong statistical power. They found that patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease (<50% blockage of the coronary vessels) are at a 60% increased risk for mortality than a patient with a normal coronary artery. However, non-obstructive coronary artery disease is not detected with traditional testing, such as a stress test. Thus, many patients who don't receive further testing may go undiagnosed.

Dr. Martin Hadamitzky in his result presentation stated “In coronary CT angiography both the degree of stenosis and the extent of plaque carry prognostic information. The (CTA) score...significantly improves prediction of mortality compared with conventional risk factors...which may facilitate a more targeted primary-prevention regimen in coronary artery disease”

The CONFIRM registry's findings come as further support for the current clinical practices at Elite Health. CT Angiograms are offered by Elite Health as a part of their comprehensive prevention program for coronary artery disease.
