Organizations across the country are creating scholarships and other funding tools to help increase the number of nurse educators working in higher education with nursing students.
In a 2010 report , AACN found that nursing schools turned away more than 67,000 qualified applicants because of several factors including an insufficient number of faculty to teach them. The ongoing shortage of nurse educators is also prompting states to take innovative approaches to increase the shortage of nurses across the country–including increasing financial support for degree-seeking students.
To address this issue a number of states have created financial programs to meet the demand for advance practice nurses and nurse educators in a variety of disciplines. Increasing the number of nurses with advanced degrees was also a major takeaway from the Institute of Medicine’s 2010 Report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. The IOM report recommends at least doubling the number of nurses with such degrees.
