"Poor sleep quality in people with diabetes was associated with worse control of their blood glucose levels" said Kristen Knutson, PhD, assistant professor of medicine and lead author of the study. Generally, diabetics have poorer sleep when compared to the general healthy population. In fact, poor sleep had been proposed as a risk factor for developing the disease.
This study is a great advance as it revealed a risk factor for diabetes and also revealed a cause of uncontrolled diabetes which will allow doctors to use it as a treatment measure beside hypoglycemic drugs or insulin.
"This suggests that improving sleep quality in diabetics would have a similar beneficial effect as the most commonly used anti-diabetes drugs," said Eve Van Cauter, PhD, professor of medicine and co-author of the study.
