I have a sore, red, swollen, throat!! There also appears to be dark red circles in the back of my throat!! What could this be?

I am fine other than that. My throat does hurt more so when I drink something hot, eat something hard, or yawn!! I have gone to the doctor at the "V.A." she did not do a strep culture!! I have no fever but headache that comes and goes..
