How long will it take my bruised toe to get back to normal?

Posted by Frostbite1983

It all started on January 4 when I was getting ready to go somewhere.  I have these two wooden planks that I use to barricade my door to keep it closed because the plate that screws into the doorway is missing, so the door doesn't stay closed.  While I was on the phone, I placed the planks against the wall, and when I least expected it, one of them fell and hit me on my big toe.  It was sore for the first few days of the injury, of course, but then it began to bruise.  The bruise gradually got bigger as the days passed, and once it got to the point where I felt throbbing, I had to go to the emergency room.  Since the blood from the bruise had already dried, the nurse practitioner couldn't burn a hole in my toenail, but she did take a razor and cut along my cuticle to let out the blood to relieve the pressure.  She put a band-aid around my toe, and prescribed me some Naproxen and Amoxicillin.  I've been taking them since this past Monday.  Now I have the big bruise around my toe, and I feel some numbness in the bruised area.  Now, what I want to know is how to quickly get my toe back to normal.  Is there anything that I can do, or would I have to visit a podiatrist?  But the problem with that is that I wouldn't be able to afford it.  Can I run water on it?  Because I have to have clean feet.  And do I keep it bandaged, or just put socks on to ensure that my affected area doesn't get any dirt or germs on it?  Any kind of assistance would be greatly appreciated.
