Lining of the large intestine affected

(HealthDay News) -- Diverticular disease occurs when small sacs, called diverticula, develop in the large intestine.

The American Academy of Family Physicians offers more information about diverticular disease:

  • Often, diverticular disease occurs from insufficient dietary fiber.
  • This lack of fiber leads to harder stools and constipation. These conditions can put pressure on the intestinal walls, leading to the development of small sacs.
  • The disease occurs in both men and women, most often in people older than 40.
  • Treatment for diverticular disease may include getting more dietary fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, and exercising regularly to help prevent future problems.
