A new phenomenon has emerged whereby people are testing positive for the Influenza A (H1N1) virus and Dengue Fever at one and the same time. This has been brought to light with the diagnosis of the first cases of H1N1 and Dengue in far-flung places from Hanoi, Vietnam to the Caribbean island of Barbados.
A Hanoi meeting of an infectious diseases institute was informed that the World Health Organization (WHO) was made aware of the Barbados situation in which seven persons were confirmed with both H1N1 and Dengue with one death so far.
Many questions remain unanswered at this early stage. It is not yet known for instance whether one or the other of the two diseases takes precedence as the primary infection and accordingly as the actual cause of death; whether the infection with one predisposes the other; or even whether there is a unique set of unique circumstances whereby H1N1 and Dengue cause infections independently.
