Event Date 1 : September 22, 2010

Jim Shelton, assistant deputy secretary for the Office of Innovation and Improvement, will give keynote remarks at the Learning Leaders Open Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 22 in New York City. Shelton will stress the important role of parent and community engagement in school reform and address the Department’s efforts to help families and community-based partners strengthen learning opportunities for students.

Learning Leaders was founded in 1956 as the New York City School Volunteer Program. Their mission is to help New York City public school students succeed in school by training volunteers who provide tutoring and other school-based support, and by equipping all parents to foster their own children’s educational development. Since its inception, Learning Leaders has grown from 20 volunteers in a single Manhattan school to up to 12,000 volunteers in over 850 schools throughout New York City.
