Can you get herpes simplex 1 on your genitals?

I am dating a guy who had a cold sore inside him mouth. His ex girlfriend said she had a bump on her genital area. She said she went to the doctor to get tested and the test came back positive for herpes HSV 1 but not 2. I thought if you have it in your mouth its 1 and if its on your genitals it is 2?
