The U.S. Department of Education will celebrate the opening of an art and writing exhibit of works by military-connected students, all winners from the worldwide Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) competition, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, April 3, at the Department’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. Entitled “America’s Children,” the exhibit features some 50 pieces of works from students based around the U.S., including Puerto Rico, and from Germany. The event will also feature remarks by Taylor Walton, MCEC Student 2 Student president at Mount Vernon High School in Alexandria, Va.; the Department’s Deputy Chief of Staff Eric Waldo; Mary Keller, president and CEO of MCEC; and Patricia Shinseki, board member of MCEC. Following a presentation by the Marine Corps JROTC Color Guard from Mount Vernon High School, students from the school will perform vocals, bagpipes and original poetry.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Student Art Exhibit program features visual art created by students in U.S. and international schools, and provides students and teachers the opportunity to display creative work from the classroom in a highly public space. The exhibits also celebrate and recognize the importance of arts education while providing Department employees and visitors an artistic environment created by talented elementary and secondary students around the world.
