U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will deliver the keynote address at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the Virginia English as a Second Language (ESL) Supervisors Association annual conference in Richmond, Va. Her remarks will focus on the Administration's current initiatives and innovations in addressing the academic challenges of English language learners. In addition, Dr. Meléndez de Santa Ana will discuss the Department's "Blueprint for Reform: Reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education (ESEA)" and its commitment to improving educational opportunities and resources for English learners.
The Virginia ESL Supervisors Association (VESA) promotes the academic achievement of English Language Learners. The organization provides information that promotes and enhances the study and teaching of English as a Second Language. It also offers scholarships to English Language Learners for post-secondary education.
