U.S. Department of Education Assistant Secretary Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana will keynote the Charting the Course of Success for English Language Learners Conference at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Alexandria, Va. Her remarks will focus on the need for reform in English Language Learners (ELL) policy and the Department’s role in supporting those efforts, and the critical role of states and advocacy groups in helping to move this reform forward.
The two-day conference, which takes place Sept. 27-28, will address common core state standards, as well as resources and support ELL students need to meet these standards. The Council of Chief State School Officers, in collaboration the Alliance for Multilingual Multicultural Education, Council of Great City Schools, National Council of La Raza, National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition, National Center of Educational Outcomes and WestEd, is sponsoring the conference.
